BOATING SAFETY EDUCATION GRANTS AWARDED BY ODNR
COLUMBUS, OH - Thirty-four organizations across the state have been awarded a total of $353,000 by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) to conduct and promote safe boating education programs this year. The awards ranged from $2,145 to $24,299.
The grants are funded through the states Waterways Safety Fund, which consists of watercraft registration and titling fees, a percentage of the state gasoline sales tax, and funding from the U.S. Coast Guard. The grants are awarded and administered annually by the ODNR Division of Watercraft to help local boating organizations increase boating education, and younger boaters meet provisions of the mandatory boater education law enacted three years ago.
Ohio law requires anyone born on or after January 1, 1982 to show successful completion of the states Ohio Boater Education Course, or other boater education courses, which are approved by the National Association of State Law Boating Administrators.
More than 12,000 Ohioans successfully completed an approved boater education course last year. Among this total were 6,888 people who were required by Ohio law to complete a course because of their age. Since the mandatory boater education law became effective three years ago, more than 16,000 people affected by this law have completed their boater education requirement.
The Division of Watercraft, U.S. Power Squadrons, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and other boating partners will offer more than 100 boating education classes throughout Ohio this year. Additional information on boating education and other boating-related programs can be obtained by calling toll-free 1-877-4BOATER or visiting the ODNR web site at ohiodnr.com
Last year, 31 organizations were awarded a total of $356,961 in boating safety education grants.
