OHIO BOATERS REMINDED TO REGISTER THEIR BOATS
All recreational boats and personal watercraft
must be registered, carry proper hull numbers

COLUMBUS, OH – As boating season approaches, Ohio boaters are reminded that all recreational boats and personal watercraft, including canoes, kayaks and johnboats must be registered, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Watercraft.

Last year, a total 412,445 watercraft were registered in Ohio, ranking it eighth among other states’ registration figures. Registrations along Lake Erie dropped slightly from 2004, while registrations along the Ohio River changed very little. The highest number of registrations were recorded in Franklin, Cuyahoga, Summit, Hamilton, Lucas and Montgomery counties.

A 12-character hull identification number, as well as the customary Ohio registration numbers, should be permanently attached to all watercraft. Watercraft less than 20 feet long and built after January 1, 1997 also must have a permanent weight capacity plate that describes the maximum safe weight of to be carried on the boat.

Owners of hand-powered canoes, kayaks, johnboats, rowing sculls and racing shells can take advantage of an optional registration method that features one decal.

Registration fees vary by type and length of boat. Registration for hand-powered boats, such as canoes and rowboats, cost $15 and is valid for three years. Registration fees for boats powered by sail or motor start at $33, depending on length of boat.

The only watercraft not requiring a registration are sailboards and certain types of floating devices.

A title also is required for all powered boats 14 feet in length or longer, outboard motors of 10 horsepower or more, and all personal watercraft.

Additional information about watercraft registration and titling requirements is available on the Division of Watercraft web site at ohiodnr.com or by calling toll free 1-877-4BOATER (1-877-426-2837).
