COLUMBUS, OH - Thirty-three community organizations across Ohio will receive a total of $364,303 in grants to help fund safe boating education programs, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). The grant awards range between $2,900 and $24,070 each.
“Our commitment to safer waterways is shared by many community groups,” said Michael E. Quinn, acting chief of the ODNR Division of Watercraft. “We are able to support their educational activities with funding assistance that comes directly from Ohio boaters.”
Money for boater education programs is provided through the state’s Waterways Safety Fund, comprised of a share of the state motor fuels tax, watercraft registration and titling fees, and assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard.
Boating Safety Education Program grants help young boaters meet the provisions of Ohio’s mandatory boater education law.
This state law became effective in 2000 and requires that any person born on or after January 1, 1982 to be able to show proof they have successfully completed a boater education course approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators. Approximately 10,000 Ohioans successfully complete an approved boater education course each year.
The Division of Watercraft, U.S. Power Squadrons, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, the U.S. Coast Guard and other boating partners will offer more than 400 boating education classes this year statewide. Additional information on boating education and other recreational boating programs can be found online at ohiodnr.com and by calling toll-free 877-4BOATER (877-426-2837).
