Expanded Program Promotes On-Campus Recycling and Reduction of Solid Waste

COLUMBUS, OH -- New funding for on-campus projects that increase recycling and other waste reduction projects is now being made available to Ohio’s public colleges and universities.

The College and University Recycling and Waste Reduction Program will be managed through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Recycling & Litter Prevention.

“Recycling is a key part of our larger mission to balance conservation and the wise use of our natural resources,” said Sean Logan, ODNR director. “The projects are part of our stewardship of the land, and will help us provide for its best use for the most people for the longest period of time.”

Funding up to $50,000 is available to qualifying projects. Projects will be evaluated based on their ability to:

Increase the volume of recyclables collected or organics composted.

  • Reduce waste generated.
  • Serve as a model that can be duplicated elsewhere.
  • Have the potential to evolve into a permanent program.
  • Provide education and awareness.
  • Assist Ohio reach its 50 percent waste reduction and recycling goal.

“Our goal is to provide students, our future leaders, with real-life lessons in the importance of managing our waste and conserving our natural resources,” said Terrie TerMeer, deputy chief of the Division of Recycling & Litter Prevention. “Meetings with campus recycling coordinators, along with two college waste audits, prompted us to develop this program as a means to addressing key waste stream issues.”

To be considered, colleges and universities must provide at least fifty percent match funding. Requests for proposal must be received at the division before April 13. Awards will be announced in May.

Information about the project and further details about application procedure are available on the division’s website at ohiodnr.com/recycling.
