FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

January 26, 2001

COLUMBUS, OH - With spring just around the corner, state foresters are encouraging Ohioans to plan their tree-planting activities now by ordering tree seedlings through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). More than 12 species are currently available by calling toll free 1-877-691-8733.

More than 5,000,000 tree seedlings will soon be lifted at ODNR's two state tree nurseries in Marietta and Zanesville for the spring tree planting season.

The trees, available in bundles of 25, are one to two years old and bare rooted. Tree seedlings are available through April 9 for a variety of species, including white pine, Austrian pine, sweetgum, silver maple, white oak, black alder, Chinese chestnut, tulip tree, pin oak, black walnut, black tupelo and bald cypress. A minimum order of 100 trees is required.

Seedlings are sold each year by ODNR for use in reforestation, wildlife habitat development, erosion control, windbreaks and other conservation projects. Through the state's reforestation efforts, Ohio is now more than 30 percent forested, compared to just 12 percent forested in the early 1900s.

For specific information about the availability of various tree species and their prices, contact the ODNR Division of Forestry toll free at 1-877-691-8733. Tree seedling order forms are also available on the Internet at http://www.hcs.ohio-state.edu/ODNR/Seedling/salesinfo.htm
