COLUMBUS, OH -- The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) will hold a public meeting to discuss a proposed submerged lands lease at Confined Disposal Facility 14 (commonly known as Dike 14) in Cleveland Harbor off Lakefront State Park. The area houses materials dredged from the Cuyahoga River and the harbor's navigational channel that are unsuitable for discharge in the open waters of Lake Erie.
The meeting will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on January 31 at the Coast Guard Club, 1055 E. Ninth St. in Cleveland. An open house will precede the meeting at 6 p.m.
The Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority has applied to the Ohio Coastal Management Program for a submerged lands lease at Dike 14. This lease affects Lake Erie bottomland at the southeast corner of Dike 14. The Port Authority's proposed lease would add 56 acres to its total leasehold interest in Cleveland Harbor which already includes the approximately 40 acres of Dike 14 that is lakeward of the U.S. Harbor Line.
The Corps deposited dredged materials at Dike 14 from 1980 to 1999. The Corps discontinued use of Dike 14 after constructing a new facility adjacent to Burke Lakefront Airport.
Written or oral comments will be accepted at the public meeting. Written comments may be submitted through the close of business on February 14. Comments should be forwarded to: ODNR, Coastal Services Center, Attn: Debbie Paul, 1630 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, Ohio, 44870-4132, (419) 626-7980.
