COLUMBUS, OH - Volunteers participating in the Waterways Sweep and Adopt-A-Waterway programs spent more than 15,000 hours in litter cleanup activities last year to help provide a cleaner Ohio environment, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).
Volunteers worked 15,230 hours during 66 cleanup events, removing 33,532 pounds of trash from 380 miles of waterways and shorelines statewide. They also picked up an additional 11,678 bags of trash from state streams.
The Adopt-A-Waterway program encourages community groups to be responsible for maintaining portions of waterways and removing litter as needed throughout the year.
Annual cleanup events are held April through October and receive strong community support. The Waterway Sweep and Adopt-a-Waterway programs are funded by a grant from the ODNR Division of Recycling & Litter Prevention and administered by the ODNR Division of Watercraft.
