ODNR AND EPA DIRECTORS REAFFIRM TAFT ADMINISTRATION’S COMMITMENT NOT TO PERMIT DRILLING FOR OIL AND GAS IN LAKE ERIE

COLUMBUS, OH -- "Recent expressions of concern that Ohio might see drilling in Lake Erie waters are unfounded," Ohio Department of Natural Resources Director Sam Speck and Ohio Environmental Protection Agency Director Chris Jones said today, reaffirming Governor Bob Taft’s earlier declaration that no such drilling would be permitted under his Administration.

"First, we believe that the Department of Natural Resources lacks statutory authority and regulatory rules that would allow the state to permit drilling in the lake," Speck and Jones said. "Furthermore, the Taft Administration is firmly on record in opposition to any drilling in or under Ohio’s portion of Lake Erie."

The directors said they have also recommended that the Governor consider issuing an executive order prohibiting drilling in Ohio’s portion of Lake Erie to further assure the public that the waters of the lake will be fully protected.
