OPEN HOUSE SCHEDULED FOR JULY 15 AT QUILTER CCC CAMP
GREEN SPRINGS, OH – The Quilter Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Camp in Sandusky County will hold an open house from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 15, according to the Ohio Department Of Natural Resources (ODNR).
The public is invited to tour the camp’s residential and recreational facilities and participate in a variety of family-oriented activities.
"We’ll have games for children and entertainment for the adults," said Walt Jinks, camp manager. "There will be outdoor cooking, Indian craft demonstrations and a cardboard boat race that promises to be lots of fun."
Jinks extended a special invitation to former Quilter corpsmembers and veterans of the federal Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930s and 1940s who might be living or visiting in the area to attend Saturday’s open house. "We would like those CCC alumni to see how the corps has evolved in order to serve today’s young Ohioans," Jinks added.
Approximately 35 men and women between the ages of 18 and 24 live at the Quilter camp, one of only two CCC residential facilities in Ohio. The young men and women receive meals and housing; job experience; educational opportunities and life skill training while working on meaningful conservation and recreation projects.
Ohio CCC, part of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), builds on the proud tradition of the federal Civilian Conservation Corps, tackling projects that improve quality of life for citizens of Ohio. Corpsmembers receive as much as two years of marketable work experience on projects such as building and improving nature trails, boardwalks, and community recreation areas. Current projects include extensive work on the Miami and Erie Canal and construction of a log cabin.
Approximately 77 of the 150 current corpsmembers live at the Quilter camp and its sister facility, the Zaleski CCC Camp in Vinton County. Other non-residential Ohio CCC camps are located near Columbus, Cleveland, Dayton and Zanesville - and near Portsmouth in Scioto County.
