TAFT ANNOUNCES COMMUNITY GRANTS FOR
BICENTENNIAL LEGACY TREE PLANTING PROGRAM

COLUMBUS, OH -- Governor Bob Taft today announced more than $354,000 in Bicentennial Legacy grants to plant trees in 33 communities across Ohio.

This is the second year for the program that provides urban forestry grants for tree planting efforts along public rights-of-way.

Administered by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Forestry, the program reimburses communities for tree planting projects. When combined with last year's grants, more than $660,000 has been awarded for tree planting projects.

"Planting trees for Ohio's Bicentennial is a true and lasting legacy that we can leave for our children and future generations," said Governor Taft. "With more than one million trees planted, we are well on our way to our goal of one new tree for each school-age child in Ohio by our Bicentennial celebration in 2003."

Taft announced the Bicentennial Legacy Tree Planting Program on Earth Day 1999, with a goal of planting two million trees - one for each Ohio schoolchild - before the state's 200th anniversary in 2003. Nearly 1.2 million trees have been planted to date.

Grants are funded by a percentage of air pollution fines collected by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and are awarded on a competitive basis, with communities providing a 50 percent match in local funds.

Through the Bicentennial Legacy Tree Planting Program, trees will also be planted along roadways, on abandoned surface-mine lands and on state wildlife areas.

Grant applications and guidelines can be obtained by calling the ODNR Division of Forestry at (614) 265-6707, or by visiting the ODNR web site at www.dnr.state.oh.us
