CONTROLLED DEER HUNTS TO RESUME THIS FALL AT NATIONAL GUARD’S RAVENNA ARSENAL

COLUMBUS, OH - Special deer hunts at the Ohio National Guard’s Ravenna Training and Logistics Site in Portage County will resume this fall, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. Last year’s hunts were cancelled as a security precaution following the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Applicants selected for the 2001 hunts at the Ravenna facility were notified last fall that their selection would carry over until the area could be reopened. Additional security procedures that were instituted this year will heighten security at the facility and allow the hunts to proceed.

Ohioans participating in this year’s hunts should be aware that all vehicles entering the area will be searched.

Hunts are scheduled for October 12, 19 and, 26; November 9, 16, and 23; and December 14. During the October 26 and November 23 hunts, 50 percent of the hunters will be allowed to harvest a deer of either sex, while the other 50 percent will be limited to taking only an antlerless deer. Only antlerless deer may be taken during the remainder of hunts.

The special deer hunt at NASA’s Plum Brook facility in Erie County has again been canceled due to security precautions. Applicants that were selected last fall will continue to be held for a possible reopening next year.
