NEW RECYCLING CAMPAIGN IN OHIO TAKES AIM AT SOFT DRINK CONTAINERS

COLUMBUS, OH - A new recycling campaign has been launched in Ohio that encourages soft drink consumers to recycle. The "We Got Plans For Your Bottles And Cans" campaign represents a partnership between the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) and the National Soft Drink Association.

The new statewide recycling campaign features a variety of radio public service announcements as well as movie and billboard advertisements. According to the soft drink association, one out of every four beverages consumed in America today is a carbonated soft drink. This amounts to about 53 gallons of soft drinks for every man, woman and child.

"This campaign serves as a reminder to people that when they are done enjoying their soft drink, they should recycle," said Ron Kolbash, chief of the ODNR Division of Recycling & Litter Prevention. "We want to see more people recycling those plastic, glass and aluminum containers. We are confident this campaign will raise that awareness."

Recycling in Ohio is voluntary. Statewide, the recycling rate is 43 percent, which includes recycling by residents and commercial and industrial business.

Recycled items can be turned into useful new products. Glass bottles can be recycled back into glass bottles, as well as asphalt, insulation and tile. Aluminum cans come back as new cans, as well as automotive parts, home siding and other building materials. Plastic soft drink bottles can get a second life as carpeting, clothing, backpacks and dishes.

There are 1,771 drop-off recycling locations and 484 curbside recycling programs in Ohio. To find out how to recycle in your community, contact your local recycling and litter prevention office. A complete listing of these providers can be found at ohiodnr.com.
