GIVE DAD A LIFE JACKET FOR FATHER’S DAY

COLUMBUS, OH - The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) has the perfect Father’s Day gift idea for the boating or angling dad: A life jacket.

"A new U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket is one of the most thoughtful and practical gifts that could be given to a father who fishes or boats," said Jeff Hoedt, chief of the ODNR Division of Watercraft. "Choosing a vest that best matches your father’s activities increases the likelihood that he will wear it while on the water. Some day it may even save his life."

Life jackets are classified in four different types by the U.S. Coast Guard. Type III jackets or vests are the most popular because they are reasonably cool and comfortable to wear and are available in styles designed for specific activities such as fishing, canoeing and water-skiing.

Selecting a style that is more apt to be worn is important because in the 19 boating deaths that occurred in Ohio last year, 16 were drownings in which the victim was not wearing a life jacket at the time of death.

"If your Dad says traditional life jackets are too hot and confining, check your local retailer for the new inflatable life jackets that are coming onto the market," said Hoedt.

Some models resemble a fat pair of suspenders. Others are worn like a fanny pack. Both models are lightweight and comfortable. An inflatable life jacket costs $75 to $100, but is worth the investment.

"You can't put a price tag on your Dad's safety and your peace of mind when your dad is on the water," said Hoedt.

State and federal boating safety laws require all boats to carry one "wearable" life jacket per person on board. Boats 16 feet or more in length (except canoes and kayaks) must also carry one "throwable" flotation device such as a buoyant cushion or ring.
