CANTON CIVILIAN CONSERVATION CORPS
PLANTS 18,000 MUMS AT LAKE ANNA PARK

BARBERTON, OH – Crews from the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources finished planting about 18,000 chrysanthemums at Lake Anna Park on Tuesday. The CCC planted the flowers for the City of Barberton Beautification Program in anticipation of the city’s annual MumFest, set for Sept. 23-24.

Ten corpsmembers from the Canton CCC Camp prepared the flower beds and planted more than 28 different varieties of mums. The flowers were donated by Yoder Brothers, Inc.

The Ohio CCC provides employment and training opportunities for young Ohioans, age 18 to 24. Young adults enrolled in the program receive valuable work experience, educational opportunities and life-skill training – all while completing meaningful conservation and recreation projects to benefit citizens of Ohio. Today’s Ohio CCC builds on the proud tradition of the federal Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930s and 1940s.

Last fall, corpmembers set nearly 33,000 spring bulbs in the same Lake Anna Park beds where the mums are now planted. Once the daffodils, tulips and hyacinths bloomed this spring, the bulbs were harvested by CCC corpsmembers and sold as a fundraising effort on behalf of the City of Barberton Beautification Program.
