ODNR DIVISION OF WATERCRAFT PROVIDES SAFE BOATING TIPS IN WAKE OF RECENT ACCIDENTS

COLUMBUS, OH - Following the recent deaths of three boaters on Ohio’s waterways and several other near drownings, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) reminds Ohioans of several safe boating tips, including the importance of wearing a life jacket. None of the three boaters killed this month were wearing a life jacket.

Here are some tips to keep you safe while boating this summer:

Wise Up and Wear It - Buckle up, wear the gear. The most significant fact about life jackets is that they save lives. It is important for recreational boaters to take the time to choose a life jacket they will wear and meets the needs of the activity in which they are participating. People who take any sport or job seriously know to wear the gear.

Alertness - Look first and assure you have a proper lookout. When you’re boating, look before you go and be aware of any possible waterway hazards such as lowhead dams, high water levels and fast moving currents, floating debris such as downed or overhanging trees, and weather conditions. Not being alert is the leading cause of boating accidents.

Don’t Drink and Boat - Operate your boat sober. Alcohol and boating do not mix! Alcohol affects balance, vision, coordination and affects judgment---all factors that are required to boat safely. It is illegal to operate a watercraft under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Effective July 1, persons who operate boats, motor vehicles and other vehicles of transport are considered legally intoxicated with a blood alcohol content of .08 or higher.

Education - Get trained. Training is required for any person born on or after January 1, 1982 who operates a powerboat more than 10 horsepower. Education and training is recommended for all boaters. Boating education classes are offered in a traditional classroom setting in addition to home study, online course and proficiency exam testing options.
