REMINDER! BOATERS INCLUDED IN STATE’S STRONGER DRUNK-DRIVING LAW THAT GOES INTO EFFECT JULY 1

COLUMBUS, OH -- Boaters on Ohio's waterways are reminded that they are included in the state's strengthened drunk-driving law that goes into effect Tuesday, July 1, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).

In March, state lawmakers adopted a reduced blood alcohol content of 0.08 percent as the limit for legally operating a motor vehicle in Ohio. Formerly, the limit was 0.10 percent. Beginning Tuesday, boaters with a blood alcohol content of more than 0.08 are legally drunk and can be charged with operating a watercraft while under the influence of alcohol (OUI).

ODNR officials advise boaters to never mix alcohol and boating, always wear a life jacket and keep a proper lookout while on the water.

Last year, state watercraft officers made a record number 100 OUI arrests for drunken boating. Alcohol was cited as a contributing factor in eight of the 20 fatal boating accidents recorded in Ohio in 2002.

Additional information about boating laws, a complete list of boating safety tips and education programs is available at ohiodnr.com and by calling toll-free 1-877-4BOATER (1-877-426-2837).
