OPEN HOUSE WILL PRESENT INFORMATION ON FOREST EDUCATION PROJECT
AT MOHICAN-MEMORIAL STATE FOREST

Columbus, OH - An open house to provide additional information about the new Mohican-Memorial State Forest Living-Learning Woodlands is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 8, at Mohican State Park Resort & Conference Center in Ashland County, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).

"We are excited about this new opportunity for woodland owners to actually see different forms of ecosystem management that can be incorporated into their own woods," said John Dorka, chief of the ODNR Division of Forestry. "In addition to this living demonstration and other displays, forestry experts will hold workshops at the site to explain the ecological and forest health benefits of properly managing woodlands."

The forest education project was first suggested as part of recommendations made by the Mohican Ad Hoc Council that met from 1996 to 1999 to plan management of the forest. Creation and use of the project was further detailed within the Mohican-Memorial State Forest Five-Year Plan, issued in 2001. For the past year, a diverse group of local environmentalists, university professors and members of Ohio's woodland community have worked together to design and create the demonstration and education area.

ODNR Division of Forestry staff will be available to answer questions about the project after the July 8 presentation.

The Mohican State Park Resort & Conference Center is located in southern Ashland County, 15 miles southwest of Mansfield, at 1098 County Road 3006.
