OHIO LAKE ERIE COMMISSION TO HOLD QUARTERLY MEETING
ON JUNE 7 AT MENTOR-ON-THE-LAKE
TOLEDO, OH The Ohio Lake Erie Commission will hold its quarterly meeting at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 7 at the Mentor Beach Park Pavilion, 7779 Lakeshore Boulevard, Mentor-On-The-Lake.
Representatives of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) and the Ohio Department of Development will present a Report On Wind Power, regarding the use of coastal wind turbines as an alternative source of electric power.
Officials from the City of Mentor, including Mayor Ray Kirchner, will be on hand to report on their efforts to acquire the Morton Salt Property that is adjacent to Mentor Marsh State Nature Preserve as city park land.
Commission members are expected to approve the latest round of grants and the Lake Erie Balanced Growth Strategy.
The commission’s executive director Edwin Hammett will report on ongoing projects, including
- Balanced Growth Program
- Lake Erie license plate sales program
- Coastweeks 2006
- call for nominations for the annual Ohio Lake Erie Awards
- 2006 Ohio Lake Erie Conference scheduled for September 7
All meetings of the Ohio Lake Erie Commission are open to the public and include a public comment period. Organizations and citizens are urged to attend this meeting and provide input on issues of concern.
The Ohio Lake Erie Commission is comprised of the directors of the ODNR and Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, as well as the departments of Transportation, Development, Health and Agriculture. It was established for the purpose of preserving Lake Erie’s natural resources, protecting the quality of its waters and ecosystem, and promoting economic development in the region.
The commission also oversees the Ohio Lake Erie Protection Fund, which is the source of grant money for projects that benefit the Lake Erie watershed economically and environmentally. This fund is supported by Ohioans who purchase a Lake Erie license plate displaying the Marblehead Lighthouse or Toledo Harbor Lighthouse both designed by Ohio artist Ben Richmond.
During the last 12 years, the commission has raised $8 million through the sale of Lake Erie license plates. The money has gone to a wide range of efforts to preserve and enhance life along Lake Erie.
