SANDUSKY STATE SCENIC RIVER DAY SCHEDULED FOR SATURDAY, JUNE 24
Canoe float is part of the 2006 Natural Areas Discovery Series

COLUMBUS, OH - Outdoor enthusiasts are invited to celebrate Sandusky State Scenic River Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 24, with a 4-mile canoe float sponsored by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). The event is part of the division’s 2006 Natural Areas Discovery Series.

The 90-minute canoe float will depart at 10 a.m. from the Indian Mill access site, located off of County Road 47 in Wyandot County, and end at the Parker Covered Bridge. A stream quality monitoring demonstration will follow at historic Indian Mill.

While in the canoe float is free, pre-registration is required by calling 419-981-6319. Personal flotation devices are available for adults, but participants under 18 must bring their own. Restrooms and picnic tables are available at the Indian Mill access. However, participants must bring their own drinking water.

The Sandusky State Scenic River - the second scenic river designated in Ohio - is located between Upper Sandusky and Fremont, and flows through some of the richest farmland in the Midwest. Exposed dolomite and limestone outcroppings add to its scenic quality.

Sponsored by the ODNR Division of Natural Areas & Preserves, the Natural Areas Discovery Series features scheduled hikes, interpretive activities and opportunities for visitors to meet preserve and scenic rivers staff. The Discovery Series programs, held from April to October, are free and open to the public. The next scheduled event is a hiking program at Wahkeena & Rhododendron Cove state nature preserves on Sunday, July 9. For more information about the series, visit ohiodnr.com.
