COLUMBUS, OH - Project Learning Tree, an educational program of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Forestry, recently received the Publications Award from the Environmental Education Council of Ohio for its curriculum guide entitled Exploring Environmental Issues: Places We Live.
"Project Learning Tree’s record is outstanding in developing and distributing tools to educators for teaching our youth about the importance of trees in our environment," said David Lytle, chief of the ODNR Division of Forestry. "We are proud to sponsor such an effective program."
The award is given each year to a publication that has made a significant contribution to the public understanding of an environmental issue. The Places We Live guide is a part of a secondary school series that includes programs on forest ecology, municipal solid waste and risk assessment. It is designed to help students explore issues at the neighborhood, community, and regional level, while also helping them to think critically about land-use and development decisions that will affect their communities for years to come.
The Places We Live guide was developed in collaboration with the Urban Land Institute, the American Planning Association and the Dunn Foundation.
Support for Project Learning Tree-Ohio comes from contributions, grants and professional development workshops for formal and informal educators. The PLT Web site provides general information and also links to a national Project Learning Tree Web site, which includes information on upcoming Ohio workshops.
