 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM ACROSS OHIO HEADED TO DELAWARE
FOR ANNUAL ENVIRONMENTAL COMPETITION

COLUMBUS, OH - One hundred students from 20 high schools, representing every part of the state, are converging on Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware this week for the 2007 Ohio Envirothon.

The annual event is an outdoor academic competition that tests students’ knowledge of soil and land use, forestry, wildlife, aquatic ecology and current environmental issues. Sponsors of this year’s competition include the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Soil & Water Conservation and the Ohio Federation of Soil & Water Conservation Districts.

The top four teams from each of the state’s five regional Envirothon competitions will compete, answering questions at field test sites and preparing a short oral presentation on this year’s topic: Alternative and Sustainable Energy. Students work cooperatively in five-member teams to answer questions prepared by ODNR, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service and Forest Service, the Ohio Department of Development – Office of Energy Efficiency, Clean Fuels Ohio and the soil and water conservation districts of Union and Seneca counties.

This year’s competitors include Fort Jennings High School, Holgate High School FFA, Wynford High School and Lakota High School from northwest Ohio; Chardon High School (two teams), Waynesdale FFA, and Edgewood High School from northeast Ohio; East Knox FFA; Indian Creek High School, Harrison Central FFA and Granville High School from east-central Ohio; Riverside High School, Franklin High School, Anna High School and Northmont High School from southwest Ohio; and Chief Logan FFA, Vinton County High School, Jackson High School and Athens High School from southeast Ohio.

Winners of the statewide competition will travel to Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York where they will compete for more than $107,000 in scholarships in the North American Canon Envirothon, scheduled for July 29-August 4.

Additional sponsors for the 2007 Ohio Envirothon include American Electric Power; the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency’s Environmental Education Fund; the ODNR divisions of Wildlife and Forestry; International Paper Company, Pheasants Forever, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service; Delaware County Farm Bureau and Canon Envirothon.
