COLUMBUS, OH - Ohio's peregrine falcon nesting season is rapidly approaching and bird enthusiasts can follow falcon activities and gather background information on a new web page at ohiodnr.com, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife.
A recent update of the peregrine falcon web site will further inform viewers and answer frequently asked questions about these fascinating birds of prey.
The site has a fresh new look and includes photographs of peregrine falcon nests around the state. Featured is the live "Falconcam," which offers images of the Rhodes Tower nest in Columbus. The image is updated every 30 seconds, allowing viewers to monitor the comings and goings of the Capital City nesting pair.
There is also information on other locations where Ohio falcons have been seen, how to identify a peregrine falcon, and a final report summarizing last year's nesting season.
"Every year falcon enthusiasts across the state look forward to watching these exciting birds of prey," said Dave Scott, ODNR wildlife research administrator.
By April, most peregrine falcons will have chosen or rebonded with mates and selected nest sites. As the nesting season develops, key events like egg-laying, hatching, and fledging at each active Ohio nest will be noted and summarized on the web site.
Last year in Ohio, 13 pairs of peregrine falcons produced eggs with 12 of those pairs successfully hatching and fledging a total of 31 young falcons. The peregrine falcon is an endangered species in Ohio.
Peregrine falcon management and educational efforts receive support from donations to the ODNR Wildlife Diversity & Endangered Species Fund. This special fund has been a major factor in the success of Ohio's falcon project, in addition to other popular projects including bald eagle and osprey restoration, and trumpeter swan reintroduction. Ohioans can contribute to the fund through the state Income Tax Check-off found on both long and short forms, or by purchasing the cardinal license plate. Cardinal license plates can be obtained at local registrars or by calling 1-888-PLATES3.
