ATTENTION GOLFERS! SPRING COMES EARLY TO THE
CHAMPIONSHIP COURSE AT SHAWNEE STATE PARK
Challenging holes, breathtaking vistas make a trip to Shawnee well worth the journey

COLUMBUS, OH - Golfers seeking to shake off winter “blahs” and get working on their game need look no farther than the lush championship course at Shawnee State Park in Scioto County.

Among the earliest places in the state to see “green up” in the spring, the18-hole course at Shawnee is perched on a bluff above the Ohio River in a hilly region known as the state’s “Little Smokies.” In fact, the course’s signature hole, the number 5, overlooks the river valley and has been consistently voted the “most scenic” hole in the tri-state area by several golf publications.

“The natural beauty of the region, coupled with distinct challenges at each hole, makes this course popular with locals and visitors,” said Tyson Phillips, resident golf pro.

The number 17 hole is especially tricky, with ponds on both the tee area and the approach. In all, the course features eight ponds and 40 strategically placed sand traps designed to make any golfing experience here a memorable one, Phillips said.

A fully stocked pro shop and snack bar opened in late February and will remain open every day until early November. Lessons and group clinics are available. League play is welcomed on weekdays.

Less than a two-hour drive from Columbus, Cincinnati, or Huntington, West Virginia, a round of play on the 72-par course is well worth the effort it takes to get there. Nestled inside the 63,000-acre Shawnee State Forest, the golf course was once hunting grounds for Ohio’s Shawnee Indians. The word Shawnee means “those who have silver” and a visit to the area offers not only exciting golf, but a mother lode of cultural and natural history as well.
