COLUMBUS - A record $575,244 in marine patrol grants has been awarded to 29 local communities to assist in enforcing watercraft laws and maintaining safe boating on Ohio’s waterways, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).

“We are proud to return a share of boaters’ dollars directly back to Ohio communities to support local marine patrol programs and make waterways as safe as possible,” said Mike Quinn, acting chief of the ODNR Division of Watercraft.

Funding for the Marine Patrol Assistance Program is provided through the Waterways Safety Fund, which is supported by a fractional percentage of the state motor fuels tax, boat registration and titling fees and funding from the U.S. Coast Guard. A minimum 25 percent local funding match is required of marine patrol grant recipients.

The marine patrol grants range from $6,000 to $32,000 and are used by local law enforcement agencies to provide emergency response to boating accidents, routine patrols on area waterways, and to purchase safety equipment for use on their patrol vessels.

The ODNR Division of Watercraft administers Ohio’s boating program, including watercraft registration and titling operations, law enforcement and boating education programs. It also provides competitive grant funding awards to local communities for boating enforcement, education, access facilities and navigational signage.
