ODNR AWARDS $350,000 IN BOATING SAFETY EDUCATION GRANTS

COLUMBUS, OH -- The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Watercraft today announced that 24 organizations from across the state will receive more than $350,000 in funding to provide boating education programs. The Boating Safety Education Grants assist local agencies and organizations in offering boating safety oriented programs.

"Education is a key factor in keeping Ohio's waterways safe," said ODNR Director Sam Speck. "These grants allow us to partner with local groups to ensure that Ohio remains one of the safest recreational boating states."

An element common to all of the grants is the offering or promotion of an ODNR approved safe boating course -- especially significant as the state implemented a mandatory education program for boaters at the beginning of this year. The new law requires any boat operator born on or after January 1, 1982 to provide proof of successful completion of an ODNR-approved boating course or a proficiency test when operating a boat greater than 10 horsepower.

Funding for these programs is possible through the Waterways Safety Fund, which is comprised primarily by boat registration fees and a portion of Ohio's gasoline tax. This fund also supports the Division of Watercraft's capital improvements, enforcement and education grant programs.
