OHIO DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES ANNOUNCES A NEW TOLL-FREE BOATER ASSISTANCE PHONE LINE --
FOR GENERAL BOATING INFORMATION AND
MANDATORY REPORTING OF BOATING ACCIDENTS

COLUMBUS, OH -- Ohio boaters can now receive general boating information and report boating accidents by calling a new toll-free hotline established by the Ohio Department of natural Resources (ODNR). By calling 1-877-4BOATER (426-2837), Ohio boaters will be linked to the ODNR Division of Watercraft headquarters in Columbus.

The new number may be used by boaters to notify the ODNR Division of Watercraft if involved in a boating accident. The number is for reporting purposes only, and is not for requesting emergency assistance. Under Ohio law, any boating accident that incurs at least $500 in damage to a boat, or causes an injury that requires treatment beyond first aid, must be reported to the Division of Watercraft.

Other options in the automated system allow boaters to listen to recordings regarding boat registration and titling information and about Ohio's boater education law. Callers may also choose to speak with an operator during the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding state holidays.

Funding for this service to boaters is possible through the Waterways Safety Fund, which is comprised primarily of boat registration fees and a portion of Ohio's gasoline tax. This fund also supports the Division of Watercraft's capital improvements, enforcement and education grant programs.
