NEW PUBLIC SAFETY CAMPAIGN ENCOURAGES BOATERS
TO WEAR LIFE JACKETS AND BOAT SAFELY

COLUMBUS, OH - A new public safety campaign targeting Ohio’s estimated 3,500,000 boaters encourages them to safely enjoy the state’s many waterways and to properly wear an approved life jacket when boating. Launched by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), the campaign kicks off the traditional start of Ohio’s summer boating season.

As part of the safe boating campaign, television and radio ads will air statewide May 20 through June 2. The ads reinforce the “Boat Smart From The Start: Wear A Life Jacket” theme of National Safe Boating Week May 18-24. The national observance is led by the National Safe Boating Council to increase public awareness of safe boating practices.

One of the television ads, a 30-second public service announcement promoting wearing a life jacket, recently received a second-place award during the International Water Safety Summit held in Florida. The second television ad, aimed at boaters, features a state watercraft officer offering safe boating tips.

A series of safe boating messages will also be broadcast over select radio stations across Ohio. Additionally, ODNR has produced and distributed a special color poster that carries the message “There’s a reason they call it a life jacket, it could save your life” to promote boating safety.
