MORE THAN $430,000 IN TIRE AMNESTY GRANTS AWARDED
TO HELP OHIO COMMUNITIES MANAGE SCRAP TIRES

COLUMBUS, OH - Grants totaling $431,137 have been awarded to 44 solid waste management districts and authorities across the state to help establish and operate local tire collection programs, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). Tire Amnesty Grants are used by communities to provide an economical and environmentally friendly means of managing waste tires.

"Ohio is a national leader in tire recycling," said ODNR Director Sam Speck. "More than 70 percent of the 12 million to 14 million scrap tires Ohio generates each year are being recycled. That's more than twice the national average. These grants give communities the support they need to create innovative programs that reduce tire waste." The maximum grant amount per solid waste management district or authority is $10,000. No match is required.

The ODNR Division of Recycling & Litter Prevention administers Ohio's Tire Amnesty Grant program. Since 1981, communities statewide have received more than $180 million to support local recycling, litter prevention and market development efforts. The grants are supported by a fee collected at the point of sale on all tires sold within Ohio.
