COLUMBUS, OH - To help increase boating safety awareness, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Watercraft and its boating partners will conduct free boat safety equipment inspections statewide during National Safe Boating Week, May 21-28. Those partners include the U.S. Power Squadrons, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and local marine patrol units.
“Capsizings and falls overboard are the leading causes of boating-related fatalities in the United States,” said Ken Alvey, chief of the ODNR Division of Watercraft. “Getting a free vessel and equipment check could prevent many of these tragedies and help insure a safe recreational experience on Ohio waterways.”
Boat safety inspectors do not issue citations, but instead provide a completed written inspection report that allows boat owners and operators to make recommended improvements to the safety equipment used on their boat. Inspectors look for properly working equipment such as fire extinguishers, life jackets, horns and navigational lights.
Following the inspection process, state watercraft officers will be distributing a limited number of watertight floating key chains that are ideal for carrying a watercraft registration.
