FROM OHIO WATERWAYS IN 2002
More than 300 miles of waterways cleaned in
Waterway Sweeps and Adopt-A-Waterway Programs

COLUMBUS, OH - Ohio boaters this year participated in 46 litter clean-up activities along the state’s waterways as volunteers in the Waterway Sweep and Adopt-A-Waterway programs, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).

During the cleanup events, volunteers worked 17,000 hours to remove more than 28,000 pounds of trash from 323 miles of waterways and shorelines statewide. They also picked up an additional 12,881 bags of trash from inland streams.

The Adopt-A-Waterway program encourages community groups to remove litter from portions of waterways as needed throughout the year to help provide for a cleaner environment.

Annual cleanup events are held April through October and receive strong community support. The Waterway Sweep and Adopt-A-Waterway programs are funded by a grant form the ODNR Division of Recycling & Litter Prevention and administered by the ODNR Division of Watercraft.
