Total 36,241 36,073

COLUMBUS, OH -- Bowhunters took 36,241 deer in Ohio during the first six weeks of the statewide deer-archery hunting season, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. This preliminary figure is a slight increase (168) over the number harvested during the same time period last year when hunters killed a record 36,073 deer.

"The preliminary archery harvest is right where we projected it would be, which has Ohio on target for this year's deer management goal," said Mike Tonkovich, a forest wildlife biologist with the ODNR Division of Wildlife.

Counties reporting the highest numbers of deer brought to check stations included Licking (1,358), Tuscarawas (1,177), Ashtabula (1,153), Trumbull (1,130), and Holmes (1,096).

The statewide deer population was estimated to be 681,000 in early October. Approximately 200,000 bowhunters are expected to participate in the statewide deer-archery hunting season that began October 4 and remains open through January 31, including Sundays and during the deer-gun season that runs December 1-7.

Last year, bowhunters harvested a total of 48,904 deer during the four-month Ohio archery season.

A detailed listing of deer hunting rules is contained in the 2003-2004 Ohio Hunting and Trapping Regulations Digest that is available where licenses are sold, or on-line at ohiodnr.com .
