COLUMBUS, OH -- Ohio's fuel and nonfuel mineral industries contributed close to $1.7 billion to the state's economy in 2002 and employed more than 10,000 workers, according to a report published annually by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).
The complete text of the 2002 Report on Ohio Mineral Industries is available online for the first time at ohiodnr.com .
The report includes detailed production, sales, and employment data for Ohio's coal and industrial mineral operations and summary data for petroleum and natural gas production. Ohio's industrial minerals include sand, gravel, limestone, dolomite, clay, shale, sandstone, conglomerate, salt, gypsum and peat. The ODNR Division of Geological Survey compiles the report each year.
The positive impact of the $1.7 billion figure on Ohio's economy is magnified significantly when value-added products such as generated electric-power, refined petroleum products, cement, building bricks, lime, asphaltic and Portland-cement concrete, industrial sand, dimension stone and supporting industries (transportation, equipment-manufacturers, steel, etc.) are considered.
A new feature of this most-recent report is an interactive map available on the ODNR Division of Geological Survey web page that provides a convenient method for quickly researching coal and industrial mineral activities in Ohio. By pointing and clicking on a mine location icon, a pop-up window opens and provides the name of the mine, the name, phone number, and address of the mine operator, as well as information about the mineral produced by the mine in 2002. In addition to making basic mine information readily available to the public, the new interactive Ohio mineral industries map allows state-survey geologists to more efficiently update the geographic information system (GIS) of Ohio mine locations.
A limited number of reports are also available on CD and can be ordered for $10 (plus tax and handling) by calling 614-265-6576 or writing the ODNR Division of Geological Survey, 4383 Fountain Square Drive, Columbus, Ohio 43224-1362.
