ODNR RECOGNIZES OUTSTANDING LAW ENFORCEMENT
AGENCIES FOR MARINE ENFORCEMENT EFFORTS
COLUMBUS, OH -- Three Ohio law enforcement agencies were recently recognized by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Watercraft for their excellent efforts to keep Ohio boaters safe. The Lucas County Sheriff's Office, the Rocky River Police Department in Cuyahoga County and the Put-In-Bay Marine Police Department were selected as the 1999 Outstanding Marine Patrols in Ohio. This marks the second consecutive year that the honor was bestowed upon the Lucas County and Rocky River units.
The Lucas County Sheriff's Office Marine Patrol Unit, which patrols the Maumee and Ottawa rivers and Lake Erie, was recognized for conducting more than 800 safety inspections, performing seven special operating-under-the influence patrols and assisting with several water rescues.
In addition, two Lucas County deputies received individual recognition for their life saving efforts while patrolling. James Schill and Sean LaPlante were honored for their response to a boating accident last May on Lake Erie during rough lake conditions.
The Rocky River Police Department Marine Patrol covers portions of Rocky River and Lake Erie. This year the unit conducted 470 inspections and responded to 37 calls for assistance on the water.
The Put-In-Bay Marine Patrol covers one of the most heavily concentrated areas for recreational boating in Ohio. Officers conducted more than 40 search and rescue missions and made 21 operating under the influence arrests. Put-In-Bay officers Ronald Root and Todd Parkison were also recognized individually for their rescue efforts.
Other officers recognized for lifesaving efforts include Lake County Sheriff Lieutenant Russell Tuttle and Mosquito State Park Officer Mark Stark.
The Outstanding Marine Patrol designation is given annually to one or more of the agencies who participate in the Marine Patrol Grant Program administered by the Division of Watercraft. Marine Patrol Grants are funded by the Waterways Safety Fund, which is supported by boat registration fees and a portion of the state motor fuel tax.
