News Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 29, 2000 ODNR DIVISION OF FORESTRY TO COLLECT BLACK WALNUT SEEDS ACROSS THE STATE - SEEDS TO BE USED AT STATE TREE NURSERY COLUMBUS, OH -- The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) is encouraging Ohioans to collect black walnut seeds this fall to help reduce yard waste and provide seed to produce tree seedlings for Ohio's reforestation effort. State foresters say that black walnut trees have produced an exceptional amount of seed this year. Once collected, seeds will be planted at the ODNR Division of Forestry's Zanesville Nursery located in Muskingum County. Last year, 275,000 pounds of black walnut seeds were collected, saving the state nearly $100,000. Seeds will be accepted through the end of October. Four other types of large seed are also being accepted at selected sites, including the Ohio buckeye, yellow buckeye, butternut and Pin oak seeds. State foresters request that the different seeds be kept separated. Individuals interested in taking seed to a collection site may call the donation site (see attached list) or contact the ODNR Division of Forestry office in Columbus at (614) 265-6694. Most collection sites will be open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, throughout October.
