NEW ONLINE FACT SHEET AIDS PROPERTY OWNERS
BETTER EVALUATE THEIR PRIVATE WATER WELLS

COLUMBUS, OH -- Property owners with private water wells now have a new online tool to help them assess the performance of their water wells, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).

Understanding Your Water Well, retrievable from the ODNR web site at www.dnr.state.oh.us, is a new fact sheet containing basic well information such as definitions and terminology, along with a checklist to help property owners better rate the efficiency of well operations.

“Private water wells tend to operate less efficiently as they age,” said Jim Morris, chief of the ODNR Division of Water. “This fact sheet provides property owners with information they can use to better assess how their wells are performing and evaluate if encroaching urbanization and industrialization is having an impact.”

Ohio ranks among the top 10 states in number of private water wells. About 40 percent of Ohio's homes, industries and farms obtain their water from private wells, according to ODNR records.

Beginning in 1947, Ohio law required drillers to complete a well log and drilling report for each water well they drilled and to submit those completed forms to ODNR. Copies of these well logs filed with the agency are available free of charge from the agency's online water well database at www.dnr.state.oh.us or by contacting the ODNR Division of Water at 614-265-6740.
