COLUMBUS, OH -- Ohio's young artists in grades 1-12 are invited to help celebrate the importance of recycling, buying recycled products and reducing waste and litter by entering their color posters in a statewide contest, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).
ODNR's Division of Recycling & Litter Prevention and the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) are sponsoring this year's "Earth Day To Earth Day" color poster contest. Winning posters, one from each grade level, will be used in a full-color 2002-2003 "Earth Day to Earth Day" wall calendar.
"Last year, more than 5,000 students from across the state participated in the 'Earth Day To Earth Day' poster contest," said Michael Canfield, chief of ODNR's Division of Recycling & Litter Prevention. "This contest is a great way for students to broaden their understanding of recycling and waste reduction and to share their knowledge and enthusiasm for others."
Poster entries must reflect one of the following themes:
- Help Lucky The Ladybug Keep Ohio Clean
- Plant Pride, Not Litter
- Recycling Saves
- Recycled Products Have Seen It All Before
- Waste Reduction
- Make Every Day Earth Day
Posters will be judged competitively at each grade level for creativity, use of color and relevance to contest themes.
Contest winners will be announced in March 2002. Contest sponsors will award each of the 12 student winners a U.S. savings bond worth $100 upon maturity. In addition, each winning students classroom will receive a $100 cash award.
Teachers can submit entries - one per grade level - to their local recycling and litter prevention program, solid waste district or ISRI representative. Deadlines will vary according to individual programs and districts, but the deadline for statewide entries is November 16.
