COLUMBUS, OH Two Ohio recycling campaigns have been nationally recognized for their outstanding waste reduction and recycling achievements by the National Recycling Coalition.
RecycleMania, a campaign developed by students at Ohio University and Miami University, was honored with the 2004 Outstanding Recycling Innovation Product or Process Award. What began in 2001 as a rivalry between two Ohio universities to see who could collect the most recyclables, expanded into a recycling challenge among 19 colleges and universities across the country. The campaign has helped increase the amount of recyclables collected in otherwise difficult environments such as dining halls, dormitories and campus apartments.
RetroBox, a Columbus- based company, also was honored with the 2004 Outstanding Minority Business/Individual Award for its zero-landfill policy for used computers, servers, monitors and other electronic components. Through remarketing, RetroBox has diverted a significant amount of its computer equipment away from landfills, redeploying it into the mainstream or disposing of it in an environmentally friendly manner.
RecycleMania and RetroBox were among 11 national awardees at the 2004 National Recycling Coalition Congress & Exposition, held in San Francisco.
