BUCKS-ONLY EARLY PRIMITIVE DEER HUNT OPEN ON THREE SPECIAL AREAS

COLUMBUS, OH -- The bucks-only special early primitive deer hunting season will be open October 25-30 on the Salt Fork, Shawnee, and Wildcat Hollow public hunting areas, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife.

Last year, hunters tagged 275 antlered bucks during the early primitive season on these areas.

Legal hunting hours are one half-hour before sunrise to sunset. Hunters may use crossbows, longbows, muzzleloading rifles of at least .38 caliber or larger, and muzzleloading shotguns of 10, 12, 16, 20, 28 and .410 gauge using one ball per barrel. All deer killed during this special season must be taken to the primitive area check station for permanent tagging by 8 p.m. of the same day.

Special management antlerless deer permits and urban deer permits are not valid for this bucks-only primitive season.

Elsewhere, the statewide archery deer season remains open where hunters may take a deer of either sex with the proper permit.

Ohio's fall turkey hunting season remains open through Sunday in 25 southeast Ohio counties. A fall turkey permit is required in addition to a hunting license. Wild turkeys must be taken to an official check station by 8 p.m. of the day when the bird is harvested.

Hunting seasons for waterfowl, ruffed grouse, squirrel, rail, moorhen, woodcock and snipe also remain open this week. The South and Ohio River Zone duck season closes after October 26 and the South and Ohio River goose season closes after October 28. The Lake Erie Goose Zone season is closed after October 31. These split seasons resume December 6. Other waterfowl seasons remain open into November.

There is no closed season for coyote, groundhog and wild boar.
