OHIO'S BOAT HULL IDENTIFICATION PROCESS REVISED

COLUMBUS, OH - All watercraft are now required by law to have a 12-character hull identification number after transfer of ownership, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). The new law allows for more accurate identification of watercraft in case of theft or other loss.

Boaters wishing to register or title their boats must have a 12-character hull identification number either assigned by the manufacturer or by the ODNR Division of Watercraft. Without a proper hull identification number, some boaters are finding that it may take longer than usual to obtain registrations and titles for their watercraft.

A boat inspection for a proper hull identification number is required for:

  • Any boat manufactured after 1973 without a proper 12-character HIN, unless a pencil tracing of the HIN can be provided.
  • All homemade boats before they can be registered and titled.
  • All out-of-state boats coming into Ohio that have fewer than 12 characters in their HIN.
  • Any boat where a problem or discrepancy is found on the HIN application.

Additional information on title, registration and HIN requirements can be obtained by calling toll-free 1-877-4BOATER (1-877-426-2837) or visiting Ohiodnr.com
