FEN-TASTIC JOURNEY THROUGH OHIO’S GLACIAL PAST
Next event in Natural Areas Discovery Series on
Saturday, September 10 in northeast Ohio

COLUMBUS, OH - Unique habitats and rare Ohio plant species await visitors at the next Natural Areas Discovery Series event on Saturday, September 10, which features the interesting flora and fauna of Jackson Bog State Nature Preserve in Stark County.

Thousands of years ago retreating glaciers created unique habitats that today host some of Ohio’s most rare and beautiful species. Fens are alkaline or calcareous wetland communities left behind by glaciers. The 58-acre preserve in Jackson Township supports more than 20 state-listed rare plants.

The Open House, which runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., includes guided hikes of varying length along a boardwalk trail through a dozen fen meadows. Rare species include pitcher plant, fringed gentian and round-leaved sundew.

Restrooms, picnicking and drinking water are available in the adjacent township park. For more information on the Open House, call 440-839-1561.

Sponsored by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Natural Areas and Preserves, the Natural Areas Discovery Series features scheduled hikes, interpretive activities and an opportunity for visitors to meet preserve and scenic river staff. The next event will be held Saturday, September 17 at Headlands Dunes State Nature Preserve in Lake County.
