IMPROVEMENTS PLANNED FOR CREST OF
NIMISILA RESERVOIR DAM IN SUMMIT COUNTY
COLUMBUS, OH - Construction of a crushed limestone path across the crest of the Nimisila Reservoir Dam and its auxiliary embankment will be done in partnership between the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) and the City of Green. The project is meant to improve the overall integrity of the dam, and at the same time, benefit joggers, bicyclers, anglers and others drawn to the reservoir for exercise and recreation.
The existing grass surface of the earthen dam and its auxiliary embankment along South Main Street in the City of Green will be replaced with a 12-foot wide compacted granular crushed limestone surface that will support maintenance equipment and, at the same time, provide better recreational access for the public.
As identified in the Summit County Trails and Greenway Plan, funding was secured through the assistance of the Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition, and will allow the City of Green to receive reimbursements for the purchase of the limestone and other necessary materials. Staff from the ODNR Division of Water will supply the equipment and manpower to build the new surface as part of an overall improvement project at the dam.
Over the years, ODNR engineers noted the overall integrity of the earthen structure was threatened by large ruts and bared areas on the top surface of both the dam and its auxiliary embankment. These irregularities collect surface water, allowing it to infiltrate and weaken the compacted soils beneath.
“The planned improvements will not only strengthen the dam and make routine inspections easier, they will also enhance the dam’s recreational value to the surrounding community,” said Dick Bartz, chief of the ODNR Division of Water. “The final product will be a win-win for everyone involved.”
The project is slated for completion by the end of the year, weather permitting.
