APPLICATIONS SOUGHT FOR 2006 FEDERAL TARGETED WATERSHED GRANTS PROGRAM
COLUMBUS, OH - The State of Ohio is accepting applications through October 13 from non-profit and government organizations for federal grant funding to support watershed projects. The grants are part of the federal Targeted Watershed Grants program, administered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). Projects can receive up to $900,000 over a three-to-five-year period.
The program is designed to support local stewardship of watersheds by funding watershed coalitions that have assessed their watershed and devised a technically sound watershed plan. Funding is available for projects that will improve water quality and reduce impairments, and that include a valid method of measuring results. The applicant must provide a 25 percent match (cash or in-kind) for the federal funds requested.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) and the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency jointly coordinate the federal grant program for Ohio. Applicants proposing projects detailed in a state endorsed watershed plan and/or projects from a total maximum daily load study will receive the highest priority. Governor Bob Taft will forward up to five applications to the USEPA by November 15.
Nationally, $16 million is expected to be awarded to between nine and 20 projects.
Applications should follow the guidance found on the USEPA’s web site at www.epa.gov/owow/watershed/initiative/implementation.html.
Two paper copies and one electronic version of the application should be submitted by October 13 to Greg Nageotte, ODNR, 2045 Morse Road B-3, Columbus, OH 43229-6693. For more information, potential applicants may contact Nageotte at 614-265-6619.
