WHAT IS ADOPT-A-TRAIL?
Adopt-a-Trail is an all volunteer program which gives the general public an opportunity to become actively involved in conserving and maintaining the tremendous natural wealth and beauty of Ohio's state park trail system. Volunteers assist the park staff with the vital task of developing, improving and maintaining the many trails within state park boundaries.
The Ohio State Parks offer one of the finest trail systems in the country with more than 480 miles of hiking trails and over 350 miles of bridle trails. State park trails take the visitor to the more fascinating areas of the state including unique rock formations, sparkling waterfalls, breathtaking vistas and scenic lakeshores. Outdoor enthusiasts from across the country take advantage of the recreational opportunities provided by Ohio's state park trails as is evidenced by the over 50 million visitor occasions which occur annually.
With this excessive use, trails can quickly deteriorate without proper care and maintenance. For this reason, park managers are seeking concerned citizens to help care for these valued trails. Volunteers who choose to Adopt-A-Trail will receive training and instruction on proper trail maintenance techniques. All necessary tools and equipment will be provided. A sign will be placed at the entrance to each adopted trail indicating the trail adopter's name (s).
WHO CAN ADOPT-A-TRAIL? • All that is required to Adopt-A-Trail is that you be at least 18 years of age and have a genuine concern for the well being of our natural resources. Garden clubs, scout troops, youth groups, special interest clubs, church organizations, families, schools and private industry are encouraged to get involved. Persons who are 16 or 17 years old can apply with a waiver signed by their parents.
HOW TO GET STARTED • To Adopt-A-Trail, simply contact the park of your choice and let the manager know of your desire to help. A volunteer contract agreement which specifies the guidelines of the program will be signed by adopters and the park manager.
VOLUNTEER RESPONSIBILITIES • Once trained, volunteers will be expected to prune, trim and control litter on their designated section of trail on a regular basis. Scheduled work days may vary according to the amount of trail use in each park.
BENEFITS TO THE VOLUNTEER • In addition to training, volunteers will be given the opportunity to learn new skills, develop personal talents and share their knowledge with others. The satisfaction and gratification gained through "giving back" is a reward in itself. Help us in our quest to protect and maintain our valuable natural resources.
