ODNR AWARDS $250,000 IN GRANTS TO ENHANCE OHIO’S LAKE ERIE COAST
SANDUSKY, OH Lighthouse restoration plans, a riverwalk/bike trail, exploration and survey of shipwreck sites and a watershed management plan are among projects that will benefit from grants recently announced by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Office of Coastal Management.
Coastal Management Assistance Grants are awarded to organizations and communities along Ohio’s north coast to improve and protect Lake Erie. Eight governments and organizations will directly benefit from this year’s award of $250,000. Recipients are within the cities of Oregon, Sandusky, Vermilion, Lorain, Cleveland, Euclid, Willowick and Geneva.
“Development that is the best for the future of Ohio will happen because of conservation and in cooperation with it,” said Sean D. Logan, ODNR Director. “These projects are examples of our recognition that the stewardship of our natural resources is not just morally the right thing to do, it is economically the right thing to do.”
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration funds the grants, which are awarded on a competitive basis. A match of at least 50 percent of the project's total cost is required.
Each project selected addresses at least one of Ohio Coastal Management Program funding categories, including public access, coastal habitat, water quality, coastal hazards, coastal dependent uses and community development, and government coordination and decision making.
ODNR has awarded more than $2.6 million in Coastal Management Assistance Grants since the program began in 1997. Applications and guidelines for the next round of grants to be awarded in 2008 will be available in the fall from the ODNR Office of Coastal Management at 419-626-7980 or online at ohiodnr.com/coastal.
