Nature Preserve
Blackhand Gorge State Nature Preserve, the only state nature preserve with a bike trail, feature a narrow, east-west gorge cut by the Licking River that goes through the famous Black Hand sandstone formation. The dry hilltops are dominated by oak-hickory mature woods along with Virginia pine and mountain laurel that are great for fall color viewing.
Stage’s Pond State Nature Preserve is an example of one of the distinctive features of glaciated areas, a kettle lake. Many waterfowl stop to rest and feed in the marshy areas during migration
Scenic River
The Mohican River has recently been designated as a Wild & Scenic River.
It is one of the most popular canoeing rivers in the state.
Wildlife Area
Killbuck Marsh Wildlife Area, an exceptional marsh habitat that is home to numerous game species and attracts an amazing variety of migratory songbirds, is along the way.
Fall migration is a great time of year to spot red-tailed hawks, American kestrels, and Northern harriers soaring through the area. Among the rare and unusual birds which have been observed at the Delaware Wildlife Area are the bald eagle, Northern goshawk, osprey, king rail, snowy owl, long-eared owl, great egret, cattle egret, and sandhill crane. During fall migrations, these and other waterfowl species can be found in large numbers on the reservoir, ponds, and seasonally flooded marsh.
The Delaware Wildlife Area is popular for early fall mourning dove and deer hunting. The area also boasts public shooting and archery ranges or shooters to hone their skills.
Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area is a great location for hunting, fishing and bird watching. Much of the wildlife can be observed by car as well as on foot. |
