01/07/2011 - In his last official act in office, Gov. Ted Strickland to sign a lease option with the Lake Erie Energy Development Co. for 5,706 acres about six miles offshore north of Lakewood. Areas included as part of the agreement are 25-116, 25-117, 25-118, 25-131, 25-132, 25-133 and 25-147 on the Wind Turbine Placement Favorability interactive map viewer.

03/29/2010 - Gov. Ted Strickland and U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown outline plans to advance offshore wind energy projects in Lake Erie.
Sen. Brown announces proposed legislation (S. 3062) called the Program for Offshore Wind Energy Research and Development (POWERED) Act of 2010, aimed at installing a large-scale offshore wind farm in Lake Erie.
Gov. Strickland asks the Ohio legislature to eliminate the tangible personal property tax on generation equipment for wind and solar. (HB 464) and (HB439) before the Ohio General Assembly seek to slash state tax rates on wind and solar farms.
The nonprofit Lake Erie Energy Development Corp., a (LEEDCo), announced that it is seeking developers to build 4 to 8 turbines in the lake at an estimated cost of $100 million.

In coordination with our coastal partners within the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and other agencies, the Office of Coastal Management (OCM) is in the process of drafting Ohio Administrative Code rules for the placement of Lake Erie wind-powered electrical generation facilities.



NEW:  Wind Turbine Placement Favorability Interactive Map Viewer The Wind Turbine Placement Favorability Map Viewer is the first application of the Ohio Coastal Atlas Use Case Toolbox.

The Wind Turbine Placement Favorability Map Viewer allows users to select and view all or some of the thematic map layers that were used to develop the Wind Turbine Placement Favorability Analysis Map below. The available map layers include all of those shown in this page's right column. The viewer also has a variety of tools allowing users to gather attribute information including lake depth, lakebed sediment, fish habitat and limiting factor weight values. For questions/comments regarding the use of this viewer, please contact Brian George.

ODNR Office of Coastal Management gives presentation "Wind Energy in Lake Erie: Ohio's Planning and Regulatory Framework" as part of the Offshore Alternative Energy Development: State needs and Proactive Approaches session of the Coastal Zone 09 conference held in Boston Massachusetts. The conference was sponsored NOAA's Coastal Services Center. Governor Strickland signs agreement to Speed Wind Power Development, Establish Process to Protect Natural Resources. The Cooperation Agreement is the first of its kind in Ohio and establishes a collaborative relationship between the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and JW Great Lakes Wind, LLC for future wind energy development projects.

"Building an Advanced Energy Future for Offshore Wind: A Conversation Among Lake Erie Stakeholders" was held from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm at Case Western Reserve University's Thwing Center, 10900 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland. Event organizers included Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office,  Great Lakes Energy Development Task Force, Great Lakes Institute for Energy Innovation at Case Western Reserve University, Ohio Department of Development,Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Ohio Wind Working Group.
