Overview of Ohio’s Approach

The first step in the process was the development of the Statewide Forest Resource Assessment. The Assessment:
  • Analyzes present forest conditions and trends on all ownerships in the state, including analysis of market and non-market forces.
  • Identifies issues and threats to forest lands and resources in the state.
  • Identifies forest-related benefits and services.
  • Delineates priority forest areas in the state across themes and programs, ownerships, and the urban to rural continuum, to be addressed by the Statewide Forest Resource Strategy.
  • Delineates multi-state areas that are a regional priority.
The priority forest areas and the issues, threats, and opportunities identified in the Assessment provided the foundation for the development of a Statewide Forest Resource Strategy. The Strategy:
  • Outlines long-term strategies to address priority areas and issues identified in the State Assessment.
  • Identifies partner and stakeholder involvement for implementing those strategies.
  • Considers other strategic plans in the Ohio (e.g., Ohio Wildlife Action Plan, Community Wildfire Protection Plans).
  • Describes the limiting resources for implementation of strategies.
  • Describes how Ohio’s activities will accomplish USDA Forest Service National Priorities and Objectives.
  • National Priorities are: 1) Conserve and Manage Working Forest Landscapes for Multiple Values and Uses, 2) Protect Forests from Threats, and 3) Enhance Public Benefits from Trees and Forests.
