Project Learning Tree

The Program
  • Project Learning Tree is an award-winning environmental education program designed for pre-school, elementary and secondary educators to use with learners from pre-school through high school.
  • PLT uses the forest as a "window" into the natural world, helping young people gain an awareness and knowledge of the world around them, as well as their place within it
  • PLT provides nearly 200 interdisciplinary activities in a PreK-8 guide as well as in thematic modules on environmental issues, such as Forest Ecology, Municipal Solid Waste, Focus on Risk, Focus on Forests, World Forests and Places We Live. Available online is a technology-focused module called Biodiversity. A special kit called Energy and Society is also available.
  • PLT activities can be correlated to state and national education standards. PLT-Ohio also has an interactive database to correlate PLT activities to Ohio science and social studies standards.
  • PLT provides workshops and in-service professional development programs for teachers, foresters, youth group leaders, resource managers and others
  • PLT works in the city and the country, indoors or out of doors, whether there is a single tree or a forest
The Activities
  • Adopt a Tree and use all of your senses to investigate your tree and see how it changes throughout the year
  • Go on a “Schoolyard Safari”
  • Discover the secret ingredients in soil
  • Describe all the many roles wood and paper products play in our lives
  • Create a collage using only materials from the environment
  • Debate as a group of interested citizens trying to decide how to manage a piece of forestland acquired by your community
  • Test the effects of overcrowding on plant growth
