Ohio Department of Natural Resources - Fall Color Reports

OHIO FALL COLOR UPDATE #6 - NOVEMBER 5

Fall color has concluded and winter is on its way.

It was a good fall color season this year, but was slightly backward from how it should have been. Instead of beginning in the north and working its way down to conclude in the south, it started in the middle of the state and worked its way north and south. Despite this, the colors were still vibrant and ranged from yellow to orange to red to purple.

The season started off with vibrant colors showing on the ash and maples. Those ranged in color from bright yellow to dark red. Some white ash turned red-purple and sweetgum displayed purple as well.

The weather consisting of the bright sunny days and cool evenings in September and the first half of October brought out the vibrant colors. Early turner trees such as green ash and walnut began dropping their leaves after the hurricane force winds.

The middle of October was near peak or peak color throughout the majority of the state. After the week of really beautiful color, we experienced hard frosts that depleted the bright color in some areas and left spotty colors.

“We concluded fall color season with a lot of fading colors with a few bright spots at the end of the month. Overall, we had a good fall season, I believe,” said Casey Munchel, fall color specialist for the ODNR Division of Forestry.
