The Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Natural Areas and Preserves, Scenic Rivers Program in conjunction with the Little Miami Scenic River Advisory Council made the decision to remove the Jacoby Road Dam.

The dam removal was funded through the Ohio Scenic Rivers License Plate program. This program provides money generated by the sale of specialized license plates for river restoration activities on Ohio?s scenic rivers.

16. Problems Encountered:

a) before removal - The Jacoby Road Dam was partially breached and in very poor condition prior to being removed. It was especially hazardous for canoeists because rebar was exposed. The dam was also an impediment to the upstream migration of fish and bi-valve mollusks.

b) during removal - All of the work was done under ideal environmental conditions. There was no rain and low stream flow conditions while the project took place.

c) after removal - Removal of the dam provided an enhanced recreational resource and restored this section of a State and National Scenic River to free flowing conditions. It was also a cost effective solution to a failing dam and an innovative use of license plate funds.
